  • Collegiate Academy open house set for Sunday

    September 20, 2012

An open house and dedication is planned Sunday for the Union Collegiate Academy, which opened to students this year. The public is invited to attend the event from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Refreshments, entertainment and tours will be provided. A formal dedication ceremony will begin at 2 p.m.

The new north wing of Union High School, 6636 S. Mingo Road, serves 3,200 10th- to 12th-grade students and resembles a college campus rather than a traditional high school.

"The academy makes it an easier transition for students from high school to college. It offers students a variety of college classes in the protective environment of a high school," Union Superintendent Cathy Burden said.

"We want their experience to be as personalized and nurturing as possible."

  • Schools call state's grade plan flawed

    September 14, 2012

With less than two weeks left for public schools to review the data used to grade them on an A to F scale, school officials say they are frustrated with multiple errors and a lack of detailed information from the state.

"I think it rolled out so quickly before they could answer their own questions. We're building the airplane as we fly it," said Janet Dunlop, chief academic officer at Broken Arrow Public Schools.

  • Schools need more than charitable donations

    September 14, 2012

Consecutive years of reductions in state aid to public schools have led private donors to raise money this year to hire teachers and reduce class sizes for schools in Jenks and Tulsa.

But administrators and donors acknowledge this is only a temporary solution and isn't sustainable.

"Yes, we can go hire teachers with the money that we've raised but that money would be gone in one year," said Danny Christner, who organized a group of parents to donate money to Jenks Public Schools. "I'd like to fix it for good, not just for a year or two."
