Michael Carrera wants Oklahoma to embrace teen pregnancy prevention and believes Union schools will be a national model. The founder of an award-winning, evidence-based prevention program spent two days in Tulsa last week, meeting with teachers, social service advocates and funders of community programs.

When asked to describe the Carrera program, Union seventh-graders don't mention sex education. They talk about their new savings accounts started with $50. They mention field trips to the University of Tulsa and space center. They recount the specifics of what makes a bully and steps they use to get along with family and friends. But the prevention program also includes a sex education component, which bucks the trend in Oklahoma schools.

Have you ever wanted to run a 5K? Or have you already run a 5K and are looking for some accountability? Learn how to run 5K (about 3.1 miles) injury-free and as safe as possible, and run with a group to encourage fun!
The instructor will take you through a 9-week program, building cardiovascular fitness, endurance and the strength to complete a 5K race. Training will take place outdoors (weather permitting). At the end of the program, you will be prepared to run your 5K on the week of November 17.
This training program will take place in the afternoons, and will be broken up into two different levels of training within one large group: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

Spots Still Available to Attend Twilight with Union Varsity Cheer
Union elementary school girls have two opportunities to spend an evening with the Union Varsity Cheerleading team. The annual Twilight Party will be on Saturday, September 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jefferson Elementary School. Girls also have a chance to cheer with the Union Varsity Squad on the sideline. Superintendent Dr. Cathy Burden, Board President Heather McAdams and Tulsa Community College President Dr. Thomas K. McKeon will be featured speakers during a formal dedication of the new Union Collegiate Academy wing at Union High school, 6636 S. Mingo Road, at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 23.
Former State Superintendent Sandy Garrett will be a special guest speaker, followed by Union Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler.
The public is invited to the dedication as well as an open house for the new Collegiate Academy wing from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. There will be refreshments, entertainment and tours for the whole family. The formal program will be held 2 to 2:30 p.m.

Union Public Schools will host A Taste of Union, in which the public will have a chance to try food from various sponsors and vendors, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 21, at the UMAC, 6836 S. Union. The event, which was first held in 2010, will be a fund raiser for the Tulsa Area United Way.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under.

Tulsa World: The district season kicks off for high school football teams throughout the Tulsa area. Friday's action is highlighted by Owasso at Union at 7:05 p.m. in the District 6A-1 opener. A year ago, Owasso beat Union 41-38 to snap the Redskins' 94-game district winning streak.
